Consumer demands needed to be met, but how could goods be taken far distances and reach locations quickly? Transportation was vital during the industrial revolution. River navigation's turnpike trusts, and railways were created to solve this issue. A turnpike is a private road built by entrepreneurs who charged travelers a toll, or fee, to use them. In 1773 the Bridgewater canal opened, and it cut the price of coal in Manchester in half. Then in 1830 the first major rail line from Liverpool to Manchester opened in England.
